Euan McGrory: Edinburgh sporting future in good shape
There has been plenty of that to enjoy over the last week and a half with Team Scotland claiming a record haul of medals at an overseas Commonwealth Games - and the competition isn’t over yet. It’s been an amazing Games for Lothians athletes as well as they return home from the Gold Coast with a clutch of medals. If I said that four Lothian athletes had never claimed gold medals before on a single day at a major international tournament then someone would probably prove me wrong. I simply don’t know whether that’s true. What happened on Friday though when Alex Marshall, Derek Oliver, Ronald Duncan and Grace Reid all struck gold within a few hours was pretty special.
The international success in recent years of so many graduates of the Edinburgh Diving Club, Edinburgh Athletics Club and cyclists from the City of Edinburgh Racing Club shows that sport is thriving in the Capital.
