Jojo Fraser: Edinburgh is an inspirational city for aspiring writers

It's National Novel Writing Month, which reminds me how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful city. Edinburgh and creativity go together like tea and toast. I think back to my school days when I shared a classroom with JK Rowling. She was studying for her PGCE whilst at the same time writing what would become a critically acclaimed fantasy novel. Little did she know that this would be the beginning of an amazing journey.

I am writing my first book, which is set in Edinburgh. I believe that the location in which we work can have a huge impact. There are days when I am on a roll and words are literally flying onto the page. Then there are those other days where I get writer’s block and struggle to finish a sentence.

If I am in need of inspiration there are so many beautiful locations at my fingertips. In Edinburgh we are spoilt for choice. I can take my laptop and notebook into a cafe and enjoy a coffee in a relaxed atmosphere. I love getting cosy in Rollo, Stockbridge, where I can look out onto Georgian architecture and boutique shops.

I enjoy taking a stroll in the Meadows with its Castle views and then nipping into one of the many delights that Bruntsfield has to offer – Montpelier’s, Coffee Republic, Artisan Roast. Plus, my favourite wine shop Woodwinters is very nearby. Any excuse.

Of course, the sound and smell of the sea is always good for the soul. From The Beach House at Portobello toCramond’s Boardwalk cafe or the many pubs of South Queensferry with their epic sunset views – any bout of writer’s block is easily cured.

JK Rowling wrote in The Elephant House on George IV bridge, next to the iconic Greyfairs Kirk. I was married there so may be slightly biased but I believe the haunting nature of this beautiful city we call home helped JK to put a spell on so many of us through her work. Whatever challenges you face – sometimes we just need to get out in the fresh air and soak up some inspiring atmosphere.
