If not quite a supergroup, then certainly a super duo, Aidan Moffat and RM Hubbert released a new album yesterday.
Both gentlemen are Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) award winners in their time and the album comes not long after another collaboration that involved SAY award winner Kathryn Joseph and James Graham of the Twilight Sad in the band Out Lines.
James may not as yet have been a winner but will I’m sure settle for the band’s recent world tour with The Cure.
Both the recent Out Lines album and the new Moffat and Hubbert album are on the Rock Action Records label, home of course to Mogwai. While there are many small DIY labels these days more established labels with UK and worldwide distribution along with years of contacts are few and far between in Scotland and unfortunately this is not something you can just build up in a year or two.
Along with Chemikal Underground and a few others, they fly the flag for Scottish artists more widely than most in what are difficult times for labels, distributors and retailers.
Going back to Aidan and Hubby, the new album has the added bonus of guest vocals from Siobhan Wilson and comes highly recommended indeed. It will of course be available in all good record shops. Surely it can only be a matter of time before there is a super-supergroup involving all concerned!
