Leader comment: Dogs restaurant closure is wake-up call

Sad news today that The Dogs restaurant is set to close its doors on Hanover Street.

Owner David Ramsden, who opened to great acclaim in 2007, has been vocal in the past about the impact of “over-provision” in the area, particularly the big chain firms concentrated on St Andrew Square.

He spoke of how business had been decimated by the number of new licences issued as well as the expansion of the Christmas Market.

His warnings today should certainly be heeded. Yes we want to attract as many different outlets to the Capital as possible and all investment in the economy is good news.

But we also have to work to preserve and support our local independent restaurants and retailers, ensuring as far as possible they can continue to thrive and share in the city’s success.

The sad fact is that many just cannot survive, and once they are gone, they are gone for good.

We hope the loss of another well known and renowned local name is recognised in the City Chambers today, and helps to focus minds on how to protect our local independents.

After all, they make Edinburgh what it is – unique.
