Leader: We're all on the 20mph journey together

It has certainly been the story of the week in Edinburgh.

The introduction of the city’s new 20mph zones has split opinion and led to fierce debate online - and this is only stage two of the rollout.

Lothian Buses say today they are keeping the situation with timetables under review after a few days of slower speeds.

And that is really what we all need to do.

It will take time for motorists to get used to the new limits and for problems with the scheme to emerge.

Perhaps traffic will be flowing beautifully in a month’s time, or maybe changes will have to be made to address some of the concerns.

What is for sure is that 20mph is not going anywhere (literally some critics may say).

The city council is committed to the policy and so must find a way for it to work for everyone - motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and public transport operators.

We expect city officials to listen and to respond to the concerns raised by this latest rollout, and learn lessons ahead of the next expansion.

And we trust commuters will continue to share their experiences with us in the weeks and months ahead - good or bad.

Like it or not, we’re all on this journey together.
