Edinburgh's Spaces for People scheme: Public consultation must be serious if changes are to become permanent, says Steve Cardownie

Election coming up, we know what to do.

Consultation? As if. CEC don't consult with Joe Public, they just pretend to while sticking their fingers in their ears, singing la la la, and going their own merry way. Vote them out in May, and if that means voting Tory then so be it. As an aside, what are the future Conservative candidates' views on the current Spaces for People nonsense, potholes, trams...you know, the things which matter to people? It would be interesting to know.

Hide AdAt a time when we are at war with a deadly virus, we should remember that this CEC and the politicians/councillors involved used a virus, £5+ million and railroaded “traffic calming” measures. These emergency powers became increased powers and they were exploited while we were all living locked down, in fear of our family’s health or dealing with worse. Every plan divided opinion at a time when we needed unity and togetherness with those in charge happy to use the cyclist as a pawn and make drivers an enemy! This was leadership at its weakest and global disaster as a smoke screen! This is a shocking state of affairs, spun as being for “people” and “green” while large areas, some of it green belt, saw houses and student accommodation appear at record pace. This is truly shocking and they should be held accountable!

The police told the council not to bother, but they went ahead anyway, as they think they know better than the experts.
Albert Crutcher
As long as it closes down a few shops, the council will be overjoyed.
Lucien Romano
Spaces for Interest Groups has been another total waste of taxpayers’ money. The council are completely out of touch with anyone who doesn’t kiss their backsides.

I would like to know who decided to give the cycle lane in Buccleuch Street another cycle lane.

Consultation? Edinburgh City Council? Is it world comedy week or something?
Steve Pickavance
Perhaps it’s time our city looked to break traditional shackles of “political” party alignment. Holding office only possible on a non-partisan basis and focused on our city. It's people and improving service, not political point-scoring or locked out challenge through back scratching coalitions. For the people. Our current administration has long since abandoned its residents.

Hide AdWe need an open and frank discussion, with the public allowed to attend, even if they need to hire a stadium to do it. All this secrecy is disgusting.
Leslie Simmons
‘Meaningful consultation’? Does that mean listening to community focus groups, then ignoring everything they say?
Neil Gow
No, this needs to be changed immediately it’s a waste of public funding – nobody wants this.
