Nicola Sturgeon set to recall Holyrood amid plans to shut schools for January

If a parent works, and their only sitter is a family member who has or lives with someone with underlining health problems, what is most likely to happen? Extend the school holidays, roll out the vaccine quicker and let’s get back to normal.

What about parent that must work how, do they work and home school their children? They have suffered enough since March without been told they are not allowed back to school.

Chris Winton

My partner is a primary school teacher. She was coming home day in day out in tears with cracked and swollen hands from hand sanitizing, (as this needs done between each child), a bruised face from PPE and the fact she is down because she cannot do her job properly. It is utterly heartbreaking. She is currently working during the school holidays to ensure she will have everything spot on for the kids for remote learning. Teachers are amazing people who do not get enough credit for the job that they do. They are not here to babysit children so you can get a "break" from them. They have families too, with vulnerable people in them just like everyone else. Keep the schools closed as long as possible. Protect our next generation, it is only for a short period of time.

Carly Millan Page

I honestly think the government just have to play it by ear and do what's best to safeguard the health of the teachers and children. It's such a tough situation, I wouldn't like the stress of having to make these decisions.

Joodith Harry-Sun

Education is vital for all children, but learning doesn’t just happen in a school building! The curriculum is designed to be flexible and whatever decision is made by SG, educators will continue to work hard to support attainment and wellbeing of children.

Now for full, total lockdown too it’s the only way to curb the whole of Covid. Get the army on the streets as well as the police. I am sick of following the rules when others are not. I would love to see the police on the Wester Hailes Road just now – it’s been as busy as a normal day, ever since level four was announced on Boxing Day.

Kirsty Welsh

I’m working from home and studying from home with a kid in primary and kid in secondary, as well as being “clinically vulnerable.” I think a good half way measure would be to go online with one contact day at school per week. This would keep the kids on track with their online learning. It’s a massive juggle, but folk do need to work and kids do need to learn. Teachers should be first in the queue for vaccinations.

Scott MacDonald

If the government say schools should go back, they are told they are putting kids at risk; if they say don’t go back, they are accused of ruining kids lives. What do we actually want them to do? A short lockdown to control this and then move everyone in to level three. Glasgow should be fully locked down as they have twice as many cases per 100,000 than the rest of Scotland.

Elizabeth Brown

Good call, we need strong leadership to get a grip and control this virus again.

So the numbers of cases are rising and the schools are closed. But when the schools were open the cases were lower? So is there any evidence that schools remaining closed would reduce the number of cases? I’m a bit confused.

Lee Boyle

Always part of the plan – get us past Christmas and New Year then lock us down. Set a date for pubs to open but don’t keep to it (when no second variant) ... set a date for schools opening up after Christmas and don’t keep to that either. Had enough of this now - we need to learn to live with this.

Graham Mitchell

I am not looking forward to seeing a failed generation coming out of school. That is two year groups that have not received a proper education. Makes it much easier for the older generations to get jobs now!

Claire Christie

Absolutely shocking. This is so unfair on kids.

Lyndsay Simm

No one is going to be happy either way, but my query is, if they go back at the end of January/beginning of February, would the schools still close for the Feb school holiday week?

I think if your child can learn at home and are coping, then it should be up to the parent. It’s different for every parent. A lot of people don’t have a choice and need the schools open. There is no right or wrong answer, the world has never been in a situation like this before.
