The Queensferry Crossing reopens after safety concerns forced closure

Peter Hynd

Fantastic; think of all the folk who were going to be late for work, especially carers, NHS staff. It's bad for all workers who need to cross, but imagine the impact on hospitals and vulnerable people relying on carers.

No, it's in no way 'highly unusual' for the bridge to be closed. It closes all the time due to weather, whether it's wind, rain or freezing temperatures causing icicles to form.

John Hewit

There is a solution to this problem. It was a known problem when they were building the bridge. Water runs down the cables and freezes. This builds up in layers until there are large chunks of ice forming. When it starts to thaw, then chunks drop off and can cause a lot of damage to vehicles. This is a known problem for cable-stayed bridges. It is fairly easily fixed by adding rings to the cables so the water drips off the rings and ice can’t build up into large sheets like it does at present. The worst you’ll get is a few icicles. Why this wasn’t implemented during construction is anyone’s guess. It’ll be a lot harder and no doubt, much much more expensive to retrofit them.

Gary Taylor

Add this to the "Another thing this government got wrong"....it’s some list, BTW.

Vivian Farmer

So, the bridge that will never close is shut again, but the old one it replaced was open, although not for ordinary commuters!

I think it's illegal to cross it right now, unless you have one of the 19 travel exemptions.

Jason Mckay

What they need is another bridge; one can be cleared of ice as the other is used and vice versa.

Joe Clifford

No it isn't unusual in the slightest; bridges close due to weather conditions on a regular basis around the world.

Lisa Gribbin

The bridge that should never close, closes again.

Pauline Downie

Really unusual weather. It’s winter, what else should we expect?

I thought they sorted all that out last year, with heating up the wires to stop ice forming.

Lucien Romano

Yes, but is it finished yet?

Ian Black

It’s going to get closed most winters; massive design; flaw not sure how they will fix it.

Fraser Blacklaws

How often will it close when Winter really kicks in?

Tree watch

Campaigners blast council plan to fell 800 trees and 'irreplaceable' Edinburgh wood as part of plans to build a new green corridor walking and cycle pathway from Roseburn to Fountainbridge

Lucien Romano

What is it about the council and chopping down the city's beautiful trees? They seem to take pleasure in destroying as much of Edinburgh as they can.

Sad to see trees get cut down, but they are replanting 5000, so in long run it’s for the better.

Anne Marie Tetshill

Where will the wildlife go? It’s disgusting, we need the trees and so does all wildlife. No, no, no.

Paul Taylor

I love the way the mealy mouthed Green Party support this. Goes along with their usual stance of building on the green belt. As long as it supports the cycle lobby they'll support the cutting down of trees and pouring tar and concrete.

Kathleen Anne Pullen

Wanton vandalism! It will take another 50 years to repair the damage.

Thousand of birds and foxes all live in there too. To think that Edinburgh, before it became a city, would have looked just like a scene in the Highlands, and bit by bit as the city grows, more of its eaten up.

Fire alarm

A homeless man who broke into a historic 200-year-old mansion and set fire to the kitchen to keep warm has been jailed

Neil McManus

A least the poor guy will now be warm and fed for a few months In winter (good thinking).

Rasim Nemian Valdes Laribi

It's cheaper to give homeless people houses than it is to allow millionaires to maintain empty property.

Violet Leslie

Jail? Even thugs who attack and rob elderly folk escape this sentence!
