Four-day working
The SNP conference overwhelmingly backs a motion to explore a four-day working week

My other half did what they called compressed hours for years, withr a Monday off and earlier finish Friday. Just put in long hours in midweek to cover! Granted it won’t work for all, but that work-life balance was brilliant as I didthe same back then, being self-employed!

Sarahjane McLaren
Absolutely; looking at evidence from other countries where this has already been implemented shows it has overwhelming positives for both the businesses and the workers. Quite interesting studies if you take the time to read them.
Paula McPheators
Try to explore and focus on how you can improve the failed education system, unemployment, NHS and many more of the basics of running a country. Prioritise, Nicola.

If no change in salary, I am sure it would have 100 per cent approval.

The extra £2.5 billion it’s going to cost to cover this I think would be better spent on services and education, seeing as they are failing.
Angela Mcdermott
It would just mean longer hours on the four days you’d work.
Amber Carr
What is wrong with these politicians? This will be disastrous for an already crippled economy!

Hide AdThe problem is the SNP base is far more radical than its leadership. If this is the party that would lead an independent Scotland, then it will go the way of Ireland -pro-big business and anti-ordinary people.

More important to propose pie in the sky policy than tackle a once in a lifetime health crisis and debate a better way forward.
James Cameron
This would be great. Shame it will not benefit shop workers.
Diarmid Murray
Productivity actually stayed the same during the three day week under Edward Heath's government.
Chris Beer
What about the self employed?
Craig Mercer
Four day working week on the same money? Aye, OK.

A reduction to four days may not cause problems to many jobs, as long as the weekly hours stayed the same. However, reducing hours from, say, 40 to 32 for the same wages will never be accepted by employers. What planet are these people on?
Joy Dugan
Does that include her?

Worked a four-day week for 15 years down in England. Mon to Thurs, 7am till 4.30pm, 30mins for lunch... loved it. Missed a lot of traffic, and Fri, Sat, sun off.
Willie Anderson
Yep, it works in the NHS.
Anna Mosspaul
It will suit some, won't suit all. Could mean a restructuring of what we call the working week. Four days on, four days off rotating through weekends, allowing businesses to open, and operate seven days a week with minimal extra costs, as Saturday and Sunday working would become a normal working day, and paid at that rate.

Makes no difference to most jobs.

Cloud cuckoo land. Can’t see employers rushing for this.
Paul Klak
Most people can’t live on wages from working five days.
Malcolm Webster
SNP says it can only do it if independent! Carrot to the donkey for votes?
Abbie Bryson
We are voting for the SNP if they promise this!
William Barnett
If they carry on as they are there will be no jobs.
Michael Gordon
Mair pie in the sky, hoping for extra votes. l’d rather they caught up with the things they've promised over the last 13 years – education for a start, eh?
