Businesses are taking aim at the Scottish government for keeping Midlothian under its current level three restrictions, despite its neighbouring council area moving down a level
Kathy Macrae
All of us who work in hospitality have been hard hit, many have either lost our jobs or are going to lose them, l will find out about mine soon. Furlough is no help, especially when there may not be enough visitors to even start to claw back any reprieve. Despite this l am in agreement that we have to get this under control. Until we have definitely been given a thumbs up for a reduced level, don't jump the gun.

Hide AdIf there was any doubt, she should have said last week. These businesses have spent money buying stuff in to then be told no. The wee village where I say is one of the closest to East Lothian in Midlothian. We shouldn’t be under tier 3 here.
Keith Devlin
Restaurants should be allowed to sell alcohol with meals. There could be a limit imposed. The hospitality industry have done their utmost to make their premises Covid- safe, much more than supermarkets. and are being unfairly punished.
Glenn Bald
I think the Scottish government is doing a great job in very hard times. We need to keep people alive.
Janette McFarlane
So sad, killing businesses and Scotland.
Scott Robertson
To everyone blaming people not following guidance because there's a killer virus; is this the same virus that's taking a few days off over the festive period? The same people that will happily travel to family on Xmas day because they are 'allowed', without stopping to think for a minute about the same killer virus they've tried to avoid for most of the year?

Hide AdThe evidence is now showing that supermarkets are far more dangerous than pubs and restaurants. No track and trace. Nobody following social distancing. The SLTA estimates that 75 per cent of premises closed now will never recover, if they even open. This will be Sturgeon’s Ravenscraig. She is destroying us piece by piece!
Student flats
Residents are objecting to a developer's bid to switch from building new flats next to the Union Canal to putting up student accommodation on the site instead
Steven Alexander Halloran
I must say I don’t usually object to them building student accommodation, but I do feel strongly about them doing doing it here. The canal is a prime location and should be looked at for more leisure, hospitality opportunities rather than student accommodation.
John Hewit
Well if the council are true to form, they will state there has been “overwhelming support” for the plan. Not sure if we, in the real world would call 83 objections against and only 1 in favour “Overwhelming support”?

Hide AdThe quote here which is important is “financially, not stack up”; ie "we can make more money building student flats”. Refuse planning and only accept proposals for permanent housing.
Lucien Romano
Yay, more student flats! Just what Edinburgh needs more of right now... If the council filled in the canal, too, they could use it for another tram line.
Malek Haddar
No more students flats in our city.Enough is enough.Families, young people, homeless people all needing urgently accommodation.
William Crawford
Excellent ... Who do these residents think they are? These poor students have nowhere to go. So yes, more student flat are essential ... brilliant decision, let those moaning residents/locals look elsewhere for their flats!

They could have made this a lovely area instead of ugly buildings.
Sheena Brooks
Fingers crossed it doesn't go ahead, I like the peace and quiet of this when I come there. More flats mean more noise.
Ian Mckenzie
Surely a residential building is a residential building, no matter who lives in it. At least you know who will be there and not buyers renting it to student groups and Airb&b.
Jamie Gordon
Destroying Edinburgh bit by bit.
Andy Watts
Always more student flats - we don't need them, we need social housing.
Tom Park
Enough is enough.
