A woman suffered a suspected broken wrist after falling on ice on a road which is closed to traffic to make it "safe" for pedestrians and cyclists

99.98% of pedestrians won't slip and fall, gritting is a ploy to sell us grit by big Salt, don't be fooled! People who walk on gritted pavement are sheep, wake up! So what if some old people fall down and die, they probably had pre-existing health conditions and you can't prove that their head hitting the pavement is what killed them.

I know this sounds unbelievable. Years ago the council stated that if homeowners clear away snow etc and a member of the public falls and injure themselves, the homeowner was liable. Has this changed?

Paul Bailey

In November in an Evening News article, Cllr Lesley Macinnes said “Soon, you’ll see our brand-new fleet of 16 mini-gritting tractors too, primed to salt Edinburgh’s network of pavements and cycle lanes and clear away snow, if it comes.” Well, I have written to her to ask why they are not being used on Comiston Road cycle lanes.

Gary Morwood

Had a wee trip up to Balerno yesterday - amazing how the roads up there were clear, even had a mini-gritter doing the pavements. Maybe the council prioritises by council tax bands.

James McRae

How dare the icy weather victimise pedestrians and cyclists? Police need to curb this.

Sorry to hear this about the lady breaking her wrist. It's very dangerous, but it doesn't look like the roads were gritted.

Paul Burgess

Pavements in some areas have been treacherous. Haven't the council heard of grit?

Kevin Home

It's the same in the borders no gritting the estate's are lethal and there gonna hike the council tax probably too pay for there allowances.

Smith C Karen

They could consider spending cash earmarked for planters and road blocks on gritters and highway/footpath maintenance, which would help keep everyone safe.

Dom McBride

Why does cold weather come as a surprise in Scotland?

Cycle paths in the Meadows are cleared but not footpaths. The area leading to the traffic lights crossing to Marchmont Road - the busiest pedestrian spot in the whole area – is like an ice rink.

David Boswell

You would have to be just a bit stupid to cycle in this weather!

Neil McLain

It’s a message from the government to stay in the hoose.

Donny Caesar

Why do you all think the council should or would grit a closed road?

When will it be "safe"? Every summer and that's it? Children are going to seriously suffer through lack of education. Not every parent can teach their children as they have to work, and then when kids do go back to school those who were taught at home are penalised by the whole class having to "catch up". It's just a mess.

Scott Robertson

Quite incredible that we get told there are over 2000 cases a day and this new strain travels quicker, yet the schools are safe and OK to open? The parents of the school kids know a bit more than John Swinney, seeing as we are witnessing it happen to our own kids’ schools on a daily basis.

Lynne Holman

Using our kids as guinea pigs - safer at home studying.

Aaliya Aldaradka

My child wont be going back. If it wasn’t safe enough in March, it’s not safe enough now.

Amanda Roy

It seems a permanent ‘heads you lose, tails you lose’ situation. If they go back on January 18, people will say it’s not safe, keep them off longer etc. But if a decision is taken to delay return, others will say “they’re missing out on education”, “home schooling is fine for better-off families, children from poorer backgrounds don’t have the laptops.” Then there’s the childcare, provision of nutritional meals etc. Any way this is decided, people will be unhappy.

Tommy Moore

School was where I used to get my vaccinations. I remember lining up for the polio vaccination. Why isn’t school used for vaccinating all staff and pupils?
