Susan Dalgety: I'm off to US to pay homage to Bruce and Aretha

This is my last column for the Evening News because when you read this I will be a few days into the trip of a lifetime.

My husband and I are going to drive round the United States in our 23-year-old campervan.

Our – rough – route will take us in a circle round the country, starting and finishing in New York.

We will stop off along the way to pay homage to some of the world’s greatest musicians, from Bruce Springsteen to Aretha Franklin.

Susan Dalgety: Sorry Jeremy, I'm not quitting Labour

We are, to use the jargon, “front loading” our pension pot to finance our road trip.

This may not be the most sensible financial decision we have ever taken, but it is certainly the best.

Life is too short is a well-worn cliché, but it is true nonetheless.

It only seems like yesterday that I was a teenager, dancing with abandon to Rebel, Rebel. In a few short years, if I am still alive, I will likely be too frail to dance, even sedately.

What the hell if we have to live on beans on toast in our dotage. These are our Golden Years, and we are going to enjoy them.
