The store has invested in new examination furniture and a state of the art Ocular Coherence Tomography Unit.

Peter Brooks (71), puts his store’s 40 years down to putting the customer first and praised the loyalty of his staff and customers. He said: “The customers are not there for us, we are there for them. That’s what I have told the staff and they have taken that on board. And if anything is going to make a business last it’s that attitude.

“We got the new equipment to celebrate. The place has changed a bit, it was one room when we started, now it’s two. The equipment has changed too but the ethos has not changed since we started.”

Mr Brooks opened the Dalkeith store on May 29, 1977, the year his daughter Laura was born, who he now plans to pass the business to. He said: “I thought I might have retired by 70 although I’m heading that way. My daughter is incredibly good so it will be in safe hands.”

Mr Brooks opened a second store in Gorebridge in 2000 and employs 12 staff.
