Taking to Twitter before the Calcutta Cup kick off, Ms Sturgeon shared a photo of her post-match visit to the dressing room in 2018.

That year, Scotland beat their old rivals 25-13 at Murrayfield.

In the photo, Ms Sturgeon can be seen swigging something from the trophy, while the Scotland players look on, cheering.

Ms Sturgeon tweeted: “Still not entirely sure what was in the Calcutta Cup - but it tasted good!

“Wishing the team the best of luck today,” she added.

The Calcutta Cup, first contested in 1879, is the oldest of several trophies competed for as part of the Six Nations tournament.

England have 71 wins overall, to Scotland’s 40.
