Mr Henderson tweeted the picture and tagged The City of Edinburgh Council saying: “@Edinburgh_CC A sinkhole has appeared on East Trinity Road at the corner of Lixmount Gardens. Very 2020.”

A driver had pulled his own car over and was directing traffic to ensure the situation didn't escalate before the police arrived.

Mr Henderson arrived at the scene at around 3pm and said: "it’s [the sinkhole] right in the middle of the road, very close to the junction with Lixmount Gardens.

“There was a good citizen in a hi-vis vest that had pulled over and was directing traffic before the police arrived.”

While Mr Henderson didn’t get his name, he said the individual was directing traffic away from the sinkhole for about half an hour.

A spokesperson for the City of Edinburgh Council has confirmed the locality roads team had been made aware of the issue thanks to Mr Henderson’s tweet.

They said: “The locality roads team are heading out to make the area safe immediately. Following this, a longer-term repair to the road surface will be required but our first priority is safety.

They added: “In addition to making it safe tonight they’ll have a squad on site to excavate and investigate ASAP, though as they’ve just been made aware of this issue, it probably will not be until Monday. The site will be made safe in the meantime.”
