The new development – which includes the delivery of 350 homes and 80, 000 square feet of office space for 700 people – hopes to provide a ‘major boost’ for the city post Covid.

Plans also include 2.42 acres of new usable space and 1.5 acres of new green space, low-carbon buildings and the planting of new trees through a guaranteed 25-year Tree Management Plan.

Ross McNulty, development director at Ediston said: “This is the largest brownfield site to come forward in Edinburgh for many years, and we have worked hard to ensure that the proposals are consistent with all the relevant policies and objectives.

"We also welcome the fact that there have been no objections from statutory consultees including Historic Environment Scotland and Edinburgh World Heritage.

"Successive ‘lockdowns’ have had a considerable impact on Edinburgh’s city centre and these proposals will be a major boost for the City at the very time one is needed.

"This will be the first major new development to begin after the Covid-19 crisis eases.

"Our ambition is to deliver a lasting legacy and a development that creates a real sense of place.”

The development application will be considered at the Development Management Sub Committee of Edinburgh City Council on Wednesday February, 17.

The development of the former RBS site is widely seen as a major step towards the city achieving fresh investment.
