Disabled children's play centre The Yard given £2,000 by STV appeal

The centre has been running for more than 30 years.

Edinburgh children’s charity The Yard has received £2,000 in funding from the STV Children’s Appeal.

The charity offers an indoor and outdoor play area where disabled children and young people can play and socialise.

The centre, which has been open since 1986, has a sensory room, bike track and arts and crafts area.

It also runs play groups throughout the week with an emphasis on inclusive and creative play.

Children and young people are welcome to bring friends and family to the centre, offering them a chance to join in or take the opportunity to rest and relax.

Activities are available to children from birth up to the age of 25.

The centre aims to give disabled children the chance to engage in “risky play”, allowing them to develop, learn, meet other children and find their own limits.

Every Sunday the centre opens its doors to the public for Sunday Funday, during which non-disabled children and young people are invited to attend as well.

Since its opening in Edinburgh 30 years ago the Yard has expanded and a centre in Dundee was opened in 2015, followed by one in Fife a year later.

The centre works with around 1000 disabled children a year, many of whom have complex and multiple needs.

It is supported by a large team of volunteers in a range of operational roles.

Celine Sinclair, Chief Executive at The Yard, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive an award of £2,000 from the STV Appeal, which will help us support more disabled children and their families through our weekly family play sessions.

“This funding will make a big difference for the children and families we support by paying for sensory play activities, arts and crafts, and outdoor equipment.”

The Yard adheres to the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

It has also been given a bronze award by the LGBT charter, a programme run by LGBT Youth Scotland to ensure organisations are welcoming, inclusive and safe for LGBT+ people.

Sir Tom Hunter, trustee of the STV Children’s Appeal, said: “Change comes from individuals, communities and charities with the commitment and drive to make a difference to those most in need.

“We at the STV Children’s Appeal are delighted to support the Yard and want to reiterate our thanks to those who raised funds – every penny you raise goes straight to charities like these to make a real difference.”

The STV Children’s Appeal raised £2.6 million in 2019, which will be donated to help children and young people affected by poverty across Scotland.

Launched in 2011 by the Hunter Foundation and STV, the appeal has so far raised over £21m, donated in 1344 awards to projects across Scotland and aiding almost 100,000 children and young people.
