Edinburgh-born Scott told RTE One presenter Tommy Tiernan that his father left his mother when he was just eight.

The band frontman, who also studied at Edinburgh University and now lives in Dublin, said: "I tracked him down many, many years later to Solihull near Birmingham with my second wife.

"I went there on a Saturday as I thought he was more likely to be there on a Saturday.

"I didn't get in touch to let him know I was coming because I didn't know why my dad had left and if he knew I was coming he might not be there.

"So we turned up and knocked on the door and this lad came to the door and he was about 11-years-old.

"He was my half brother and he didn't know I existed.

He said: "So we waited and after about half an hour my dad drove up and there he was. I hadn't seen him in 28 years.

"I could sort of recognise him and of course I knew it was him.

"We spoke to him and he was very, very surprised. He said: 'I always knew this day would come.'

"He said for us to come into the house and as he went into the house I looked at the back of his head and the way that his hair curled was exactly how I remembered. And we became pals. Great pals."
