Is there someone in your life who could be described as the Volunteer of the Year, or an individual who has earned the title of Health Champion for their work?

The Edinburgh Evening News is searching for volunteers who go above and beyond to help others as well as someone who has drastically improved someone’s living conditions or health through their work.

Winners will be announced at a live-streamed event at the Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spa on October 9.

The Volunteer of the Year award is to recognise those who dedicate their time to help others. Those nominated may spend their weekends or even give full time voluntary help to those who need it most. This is a job they do for love, not money.

The role of a volunteer in society has never been so prominent as it is today, and the role that volunteer-led agencies have played during the Covid-19 pandemic has been exceptional.

They have kept Edinburgh going during the most difficult of times.

Last year’s winner was Maria Barnett who was recognised for her work in providing vital home care services to those with children with disabilities.

The Health Champion award is where judges look for someone who has improved a person’s health and/or made an impact on the quality of life of an individual. They may work in the NHS or health care industry, providing a service above and beyond the call of duty, taking personal responsibility for a person’s wellbeing.

They may be a champion for health and wellbeing issues, healthy lifestyles and exercise in the community.

Last year’s winners were Catriona Scott and Sandra Bagnall after the pair inspired pupils and teachers at Broughton Primary to improve their wellbeing by leading the Edinburgh Marathon programme.

House of Hearing sponsors the award and Phillip Page, Senior Audiologist at House of Hearing, said: “We are delighted to support the Local Hero Awards again this year.

“Going above and beyond defines the service that we provide at House of Hearing, so we are proud to recognise this dedication in the community.”

Nominations for the 14 Edinburgh Evening News Local Hero awards are open until September 18.
