Steve Brown from Edinburgh is one of just 12 shortlisted for ‘Most Heroic Individual’ at the Heinz Food Heroes awards, which looks to celebrate people who work in food that have gone the extra mile to make things better in their community in the last 12 months.

The winner will receive a £5,000 bursary to help them continue to make life better for their community.

Steve runs a Social Enterprise, Edinburgh Food Social, which is dedicated to teaching children about food.

When the pandemic hit and lockdown started, his immediate concern was for the people in the communities he works with not having access to enough food. Within the first week of lockdown he contacted and brought together many people he knew from years working in the hospitality industry and set-up ‘Food for Good’.

This collective of people and companies immediately began serving hundreds of meals to those that needed them, which quickly turned into thousands of meals a week and throughout lockdown. They provided over 60,000 meals to people who were struggling and did not have access to food for a huge number of reasons.

Steve was nominated for the award by his wife Jemma Brown, who says he ‘worked tirelessly’ helping others.

Heinz Food Heroes will be judged by 2016 Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown, along with Heinz’s President of Northern Europe, Jojo de Noronha, and food sector experts.

Winners will be announced in a virtual awards ceremony in early November.
