Edinburgh street named among UK’s most colourful locations

An Edinburgh street has been named as one of the most vibrant and colourful places in the UK.

The Capital’s stunning Victoria Street was one of only three Scottish locations to make the top ten.

The others were Main Street of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull and Quay Street at Portree Harbour on the Isle of Skye.

Dulux paint company conducted the research by analysing 20 images from the most famously colourful urban areas of the UK.

Colour identifier tools were used to determine which streets displayed the highest number of different colours.

Taking the number one spot was Bristol’s Cliftonwood Terrace, with a total of 14 different colours identified among the buildings.

Victoria Street came 6th overall on the list, with 10 colours on display.

One of Edinburgh’s most beautiful locations, this cobbled street was constructed between 1829 and 1834, and connects the Grassmarket with George IV Bridge.

Today, it is known for its colourful shop fronts, making it one of the most Instagrammable spots in the city.

The mix of several centuries of incredible architecture, vibrant atmosphere and quirky selection of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants have secured Victoria Street’s status as one of the jewels in Edinburgh’s crown.

A spokesperson for Dulux said: "It's easy to think that the UK’s unwavering obsession with colourful houses is down to Instagram and the prettiness they provide for our feeds, but Brits actually have a long history of painting houses in bright hues.

The list also included Neal’s Yard, Covent Garden, London; Portmeirion, Gwynedd, Wales; Tenby Harbour, Pembrokeshire, Wales; Portobello Road, Notting Hill, London; Dukes Lanes, Brighton and Lancaster Road, Notting Hill, London.
