Edinburgh woman fumes at council over 'shoddy' kitchen and bathroom refurbishments she waited 10 months for

An Edinburgh woman has revealed her fury at the council over 'shoddy' kitchen and bathroom refurbishments, after waiting 10 months for the work to be carried out.

Single full-time mother Lauren Currie, 29, had been left frustrated after waiting since February for the council to refurbish the kitchen and bathroom in her “falling apart” Drylaw flat, that she shares with her 11-year-old son.

Lauren, who suffers from health conditions including ADHD, tourette syndrome, borderline personality disorder and anxiety, said that she was left further upset after the work was carried out on Monday, with the council contractors leaving mess behind and what she called “shoddy” and “unfinished work”.

She said: “I first contacted them in February about my house falling apart. I suffer from anxiety so it’s been a stressful time waiting on the work to be carried out.

“They then gave me a new kitchen but it’s shoddy work and not up to standard. And the bathroom has been half done. And there were no covers put down on the floor, so the place is a mess.

“I was meant to get a new sink and toilet, but didn’t. And they left blood in my house after one of the guys cut himself doing the work.

“It’s just really negligent of the council to treat a tenant like this. I always pay my rent on time and they treat me like this? They are just taking money off me and not doing any satisfactory work.”

Lauren said she “got nowhere” when raising concerns with the council this week.

She said: “I phoned to complain about the kitchen and bathroom and they are not sending out an inspector to see if the work was done properly. The council said I was being out of order.

“I have explained to the council I can’t go through this, having a half-done bathroom and my kitchen being a mess.

“I went to the council office but got nowhere. They are not taking accountability for the fact that they are neglecting me.

“The whole situation has taken a toll on my life and I don’t know who to talk to. I’m on the verge of going to a lawyer.”

A City of Edinburgh Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the concerns raised by the tenant and are actively working to address and resolve these as soon as possible.”
