Edinburgh Zoo’s new and adorable baby pygmy hippo has just been named.

The calf, who was born at the zoo in April, has been named Amara in a tribute to the species’ native home of West Africa.

Hide AdThe name means ‘grace’ and was chosen by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.


In a statement on Amara, the zoo added: “The RZSS WildGenes team contribute to work to protect animals across the globe, including publishing the first ever genomic study of pygmy hippos.”
