Victoria Bar in Leith Walk shut its doors around midnight on Saturday after a customer who had been in earlier that day called to say he had the virus after being tested at the airport.

It is understood the customer had recently returned from holiday in Malta, where he may have become infected.

But bar owner Anna Christopherson said the infection risk was low as there were only four people there at the time.

Anna said one staff member was working when the customer concerned was in the bar and they were not close to them for any length of time. NHS Test and Protect were in contact and this employee has since been tested and returned a negative result, as have the other customers who were in the bar at the time.

This week, Edinburgh-based Bluestone Cleaning steam cleaned the bar interior at 150 degrees celsius, as shown in new video footage.

Anna said: "Every day is a challenge. It's quite tough for everyone in hospitality at the moment and we are just trying to find our feet and our best and we want to make sure everyone is safe."

She also urged customers to use their common sense and self-isolate if returning from a country where quarantine rules are being enforced, even if they have returned a day before they officially come into force.
