Fettes College to make 1,500 meals a week for vulnerable people during lockdown

Fettes College has joined forces with social enterprise Scran Academy to give out 1,500 free meals a week to vulnerable people during the coronavirus lockdown.

The school made 1,000 meals this week and will increase to 1,500 next week.

The meals are made in the school’s catering facilities by Catering Manager James Wood and Executive Chef Ally MacDonald, along with volunteers and former pupils.

They will be distributed by Scran Academy, the Pilton-based charity founded to help young people gain qualifications and work experience in catering and hospitality, which has refocused its efforts during lockdown on delivering free meals to those who need them.

Head of Fettes College Helen Harrison said: "Fettes is committed to doing all we can to support our local community and strengthening the community ties we already especially during the COVID 19 pandemic.

“When approached by Scran Academy, who we already have ties with through Fetlor Youth Club, we wanted to assist in whatever way we could.

“By providing our kitchens and trained volunteer staff we aim to support the incredible ongoing work of Scran Academy and ensure that they can positively impact more people in Edinburgh in need of warm, nourishing, safely prepared food."
