The 10-year-old dog named Hermann was adopted by Liza two years ago after her friend Murphy passed away.

Hermann recently developed a tumour on his lip, just two years after battling and recovering from a serious infection believed to have been caused by the trauma of losing his owner which resulted in him being castrated.

A biopsy of the tumour has left him needing reconstructive surgery on his mouth which is over and above what pet insurance will cover.

The dog, who is described as ‘caring’ and ‘dutiful’ has always made sure those around him are okay, even after a traumatic ordeal.

Tragically, in 2018, Hermann’s owner Murphy died in his flat and was found days later with the much loved pet at his side.

Liza, who had known Murphy and Hermann for years took the dog in after he was found dehydrated to the point that he could not bark and barely lift his head with his bones showing through his fur.

Through a lot of care and affection, Liza helped Hermann back to health and adapt to his new life.

She said: “I wasn’t sure if he was going to bounce back from that, we made sure to give him lots of attention, we got him acupuncture, everything to make him better and everything he deserved and at the same time I was grieving for my friend too.

“It was like Hermann had his dog duty and was making sure I was okay and helping me out as well.”

“He’s always happy and playing. Sometimes when we take him for walks we bump into other dog owners who have met himwhen he has been on walks with other people and they always ask it’s him.”

On Monday, Hermann had a biopsy to remove the tumour from however his lip needs remodelled.

The insurance doesn’t cover the cost, given his age and the fact that he was operated on just a couple of years ago.

If the results of the biopsy conclude it was cancerous, Hermann may require more treatment which sees the costs adding up to thousands of pounds.

Liza’s friend Alix who launched the fundraiser wrote: “Liza is not only self-employed and needless to say her employment plummeted during the Covid crisis but also had a baby during the pandemic so her possibilities of working more now are very limited.

“With your help, she will be able to give wee Hermann another fighting chance at life.

“He is so brave to have survived what he did, and clearly has the will to live. I think that our friend would have been touched to see what Hermann has come to mean to all those who meet him and relieved that Liza has been taking such great care of him.”

The amount raised will go to giving Hermann another chance to live life to the fullest.

Any additional funds over the amount of the vet bills will be donated to the Edinburgh Dog and Cat home to help other pets and pet owners who may find themselves facing hardship.
