But people on one city street have taken the popular children’s game to the next level during the current Covid-19 lockdown.

Pictures shared on social media on Saturday show a huge hopscotch game running up the pavement from the bottom of Leamington Terrace, where it meets Gilmore Place, towards Bruntsfield Place.

A paper sign on a house door near the bottom of the street urges passers-by to “take a chalk for hopscotch” and “add some squares” as they walk up the hill, adding: “And see if we can make it to the top (Bruntsfield Place) before it rains.”

One local resident, who had just finished a 10km walk on Saturday, estimated the hopscotch game stretches at least 150-200 yards up the hill – but he didn’t follow it all the way to the end as was heading in the other direction.

The resident, whose wife is a GP, said: “I think it's absolutely brilliant that local kids and families are doing this. It, along with all the other messages chalked for the NHS and other essential workers, always bring a smile to my face.

“I encountered this at the end of a 10km walk around Gorgie, Dalry and Polwarth early this morning and saw a number of such messages. Wonderful!”

The resident said he also came across a number of other heartwarming messages drawn on pavements on the walk around Gorgie, Dalry and Polwarth.

It remains unclear who exactly started the big game of hopscotch but the sign on the house door on Leamington Terrace also shows a rainbow with the #LeamingtonLeap.

In smaller text, it asks people to take their chalk with them after adding a square.
