'Happy day': Nicola Sturgeon gets first haircut of the year at Beehive Hair and Make-up salon in Edinburgh

The First Minister headed to Beehive Hair and Make-up salon in Edinburgh on Monday as lockdown restrictions ease, allowing for hairdressers to re-open.

From Monday (April 5), hairdressers reopened, and, taking to Instagram to celebrate this easing, Ms Sturgeon posted a picture of herself with wet hair at a mirror in the Dalmeny Street salon with the caption: “Happy day”.

Ms Sturgeon had her hair cut by Edinburgh-based hairdresser Julie McGuire who has worked with the FM for many years now.

British Vogue included her hairstyle on Ms Sturgeon in their 'Power Hair' feature.

Ms McGuire who works as a freelance hairdresser at Beehive Hair and Make Up salon in Edinburgh said: “It was brilliant to see Nicola.

"Nicola has been doing hers at the front with my tapering scissors.

"She’s such a great woman- she just gets on with things.”

During the first lockdown, Ms McGuire gave the First Minister her tapering scissors along with a couple of zoom lessons alongside her husband Mr Murrell.

Ms McGuire commented that Mr Murrell is a “dab hand” at cutting the FM’s hair, however, added that a well-trained hand was “definitely needed.”

Talking about the way she styled the leading politician’s hair, Ms McGuire who has also cut the hair of Great British Bake Off Winner Peter Sawkins said: “Nicola always goes for something easy so she doesn’t have to worry about it so a texturised haircut with her colour broken up a bit.”

Commenting on what it is like returning to the salon, Ms McGuire who also works on TV sets said: "It’s been so surreal- for everyone, this has brought back a little bit of normality.”

"I’m quite glad that I’ve had TV shoots and everything to warm up before this- it’s a very physical job on your feet.”

“It’s great that filming has been allowed as it’s been a bit of a godsend but if I hadn’t had that I would have really struggled financially.

"All of us who have been self employed- it’s been really hard as our industry has suffered so much.”

Ms McGuire mentioned that with salons now back open she is able to have more financial stability.
