It will be auctioned as part of Heritage Auction’s rare books event, which takes place in New York.

Listed among the top five “finest collectibles in Muggledom”, the 1930s-era dining chair was given to Rowling in 1995 as part of a free set to furnish her council flat in Edinburgh.

James Gannon, from Heritage Auctions, said: “The international phenomenon that would become, and still is, Harry Potter had its humble beginnings in this modest old chair.

“It’s inspiring to imagine the young mother and author settling down at her desk, seated in this chair.”

The chair was donated by Rowling as part of a fundraiser in 2002 before being sold in 2009.

Mr Gannon added: “[The chair] lives now as a powerful, tangible symbol of her determination and incredible imagination.”
