‘I built my bridge out of pride and passion’: Push to get Lego to make the Forth Bridge fewer than 1,000 votes off

A push to get Lego to make the iconic Forth Bridge as their next set is less than 1,000 votes off.

The appeal was started by engineer Mike Dineen, who made his own version of the bridge using 3,000 bricks.

His product idea page on the Lego site requires 10,000 votes for the Danish toy company to consider it as an option.

He wrote: “I built my bridge out of pride and passion.

"I’m incredibly proud to live in a country that is home to one of the greatest and most iconic structures around the world.

"Designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker, completed in 1890 and surviving two world wars, the Forth Bridge continues to operate as a functional bridge to this day, dominating the skyline over Scotland.”

Mr Dineen said that not only will his bridge be fun to build, it will help to educate people on the principals of bridge design and offer an insight into how the Forth Bridge was built.

He continued: “Many people are not aware just how long the bridge is in reality, 2.4km, and just how slender it is in relation to its length. I found it very rewarding to design something so unique.”

When the Forth Bridge was under construction, engineers had to construct the each side of the tower at an equal rate, if done unevenly an imbalance in the weight would cause the tower to topple over.

Mr Dineen replicated this concept in his Lego model and says that once completed, it is an “absolutely sold structure”.

He added: “With your help, I would love to see this bridge replicated as an incredible Lego set.”
