The 55-year-old and little Rory, aged two, have been separated since the lockdown began and both miss each other’s company dreadfully.

The strict measures meant a big lifestyle change for Dorothy who would look after Rory twice a week before the new restrictions were put in place.

Dorothy, from Port Seton, tried to keep in touch while adhering to social distancing rules – meaning she had to wave at Rory through a window.

She said: “When lockdown began I didn’t see my grandson for two weeks then decided to do a “window wave”.

“The first time was good with everyone having a laugh and a wave so I decided to repeat this but Rory became upset so I didn’t do it again.

“He didn’t understand why I couldn’t come into his home and why I just went away.

“I must admit it was difficult not to but I felt it was better not to do this again.”

Dorothy, a nurse, is delighted at the prospect of what will be an emotional reunion.

She said: “We love going down the beach together, looking for shells and wee fish. I just love seeing Rory’s running about. He’s full of energy.

“I also love when he stays the night and that first-morning smile just melts my heart. I’m looking forward to him running about my house again. Children fill homes with a joy only they can bring.”

Rory’s life is full of love and he has a team of four grandparents including his other gran, Louise (pictured), and devoted parents Kelly and Stewart.

Louise said: “I have missed Rory terribly, it’s the joy they bring, he’s just great fun to be around so it has been difficult, but we are lucky.

“Rory’s a very happy wee boy so yes it’s hard but we will all be together again soon. Not every family can say this sadly, so we are just keeping things in perspective, and appreciate Rory’s health and happiness is our main concern.”
