Kind-hearted six-year-old takes on 20,000 steps a day challenge to raise funds for Social Bite

A six-year-old from Gorebridge has taken on the challenge of attaining a 20,000 step count every day throughout February to raise money for homeless charity, Social Bite.

Since beginning the challenge on February 1, Sebastian Glover has racked up more than 60,000 steps on a FitBit - the equivalent of around 30 miles of walking so far.

His proud mum, Jennifer said: “He’s just got such a kind heart and wants to help whoever he can, he’s always talking about helping people less fortunate and now in the colder months he has seen homeless people and asked lots of questions about who is looking after them and how do they keep warm.

“To help he was asking if we could bring them food and we usually donate to food banks and charities particularly around Christmas, and then came on to the idea to raise money for a charity to help homeless people.”

Sebastian set himself a target of achieving 20,000 steps a day - which, while his mum thought might be too much for him, he was defiant in reaching - and an initial fundraising target of £1,000.

Four days into the challenge, he has already raised more than £1,000 for Social Bite, which will go towards food, housing and helping those in need get back on their feet. He now hopes to raise as much as he can.

On the JustGiving page, Sebastian said: “My name is Seb, I am 6 years old - and I asked my mum if I could raise money for charity to help homeless people during the cold winter months. “I have a warm home with lots of food and nice things, but many other people don't and it makes me sad so I would like to do something to help give someone a meal and warm clothes.

“I have challenged myself to do 20,000 steps every day for the month of February (My mum thinks this is a very tough challenge) but I am excited to see how much I can raise to help people.”

To achieve the step count he wakes up and hits 4,000 steps before 9am, he runs around in the house, plays with his little sister and also takes part in Joe Wicks workouts.

See attends school while both his mum and dad are working, and increases the step count when going out on walks throughout the day, playing no contact football and running around.

By bedtime at 8:30pm he has tired himself out and rests up for another day of the challenge.

Josh Littlejohn, co-Founder of Social Bite, said: “We are so grateful to Seb for his fantastic fundraising effort. Doing 20,000 steps a day for a full month is impressive for anyone, let alone someone so young.

“The money raised from his inspiring challenge will help transform the lives of people experiencing homelessness across the country and we can’t thank him enough. Good luck Seb!”
