The SNP remain the biggest party in both Edinburgh and Glasgow after another election victory in Scotland.

Nicola Sturgeon hailed the seismic result and tweeted: “National/city trends aside, this result is seismic. For years, Pollokshields was the only Tory seat in Glasgow and it seemed we would never take it.”

Elsewhere in the city, leader Susan Aiken was overtaken by the Scottish Greens on first preference votes in the Langside ward.

Meanwhile across Scotland and the UK it was a damaging night for the Conservatives.

RESULT: The SNP have gained one seat and the Scottish Conservatives lost two in Clackmannanshire.

The SNP remain the largest party with nine of the 18 seats.

Labour remain on five and the Tories are down to three.

The Scottish Greens have one councillor.

First Minister has hailed a “seismic” result for the SNP in Glasgow.

Nicola Sturgeon’s party had two councillors elected in the Pollokshields ward of Glasgow City Council, while Tory councillor David Meikle – the husband of former MP Natalie McGarry – lost his seat.

Ms Sturgeon said on Twitter: “National/city trends aside, this result is seismic. For years, Pollokshields was the only Tory seat in Glasgow and it seemed we would never take it.”

RESULT:

The Scottish Conservatives lost two seats in South Ayrshire but held on as the largest party with 10 councillors.

The SNP has nine, the same as the last election, and Labour remains on five.

RESULT:

The Scottish Conservatives gained three seats to overtake the SNP as the largest party in Moray.

The Tories now have 11 seats, with the SNP down one to eight.

Labour are up two seats to three.

Angus Council has a new largest party with the SNP gaining 4 seats.

The party is now the biggest group with 13 councillors while the Tories lost one to drop to seven.
