M8 crash: Fatal crash closes road between Shotts and Whitburn

The crash happened in the early hours of Friday morning.

The M8 will remain closed on Friday afternoon following a tragic fatal crash in the early hours of the morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident on the east bound carriage way near Shotts at around 4.05am.

The M8 has been closed after a fatal crash.

The M8 between Shotts and Whitburn was closed and both east and westbound between junction four and five will remain closed while the collision investigation is ongoing.

The sole occupant of a vehicle involved in the crash has died.

Chief Inspector Darren Faulds, said: "Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the person who sadly lost their life in this incident.

"We understand that closing this major route has caused significant disruption to motorists, and we thank them for their patience while we continue to respond to this serious incident.

"I would ask any driver using the M8 in the early hours of this morning who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have dash cam footage of the incident, contact police."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident 0355 of October 2, 2020.

Delays in the area throughout the morning could last around 95 minutes and commuters were shocked as cars began doing three point turns on the motorway and driving dangerously back the wrong way to avoid the traffic.

One driver took a picture of several vehicles facing the opposite direction to traffic claiming motorists have started turning around and driving down the hard shoulder to avoid the long delays.
