Bystanders quickly snapped pictures as the swan breezed out into the middle of the road, seemingly unfazed as all traffic screeched to a halt.

Chris Thomson, a Musselburgh resident, was standing with his daughter when the curious swan appeared.

He said: “I was just standing out side Boots with my youngest daughter and heard flapping of wings and seen this swan land on the road next to Poundland.

"No one noticed expect the cars that it was blocking then it started to make it way down the high street casually, still on the road.”

Chris said that somebody must have popped into the local police station as he saw two officers grab the offending bird with a jacket and carry it back to the water.

“It was a funny sight. It had no care and was in no rush.” he concluded.
