North Berwick Coastguard issues warning over suspected ordnance

The coastguard told people “if in doubt, call!”

People should call the emergency services if they spot “someone or something” they are concerned about on the coastline, beaches or harbours, according to North Berwick Coastguard.

The warning comes after two incidents of suspected ordnance were reported to the coastguard in the last three days.

On Saturday (18 April), the coastguard helped East Lothian Police with an object thought to be unexploded ordnance on the coastline between Yellowcraig and Gullane.

The object was identified as an “inert training device” by police and disposed of safely.

Then again, on Monday (20 April), the team from North Berwick were called to reports of an unusual object in the water at Port Seton Harbour.

The coastguard identified it as a local marker and stood down.

In a Facebook post, North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team told the public: “See someone or something on the coastline, beaches, water, harbours or mud you are concerned about? Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. If in doubt, call!”
