Popular Livingston nightclub to be transformed into a scare maze for Halloween

From nightclub to scare maze, Livingston’s Club Earth is set to undergo a make-over as it is transformed into LivingDeadston, a horror Halloween experience complete with ‘real life’ zombies, deathly demons and playful spirits to provide socially distanced scares.

The LivingDeadston Scare Maze is the brainchild of club promoter Darren Laurie, who has spent tens of thousands of pounds to stage the event, which will run from Wednesday October 28 until Sunday November 8 and include a scary tribute to Lizzie Bryce, the 19th century Midcalder woman who was reputedly a witch and has a nearby roundabout named after her.

The attraction will feature props and sets specially made by Visual Architects, the creative designers behind international club nights Creamfields, Eden and Ocean Beach in Ibiza, which will be revealed at a VIP launch expected to be attended by celebrities such as lottery winner Jane Park, Love Island’s Biggs Chris and Rebecca Gormley, comedian Gary Faulds and boyband Just The Brave.

Mr Laurie says, “We've teamed up with one of the nations biggest event production companies. They are heavily involved in the haunted drive thru in Manchester and their visual effects are incredible. We are very excited about the actors we have on board for this too. We are very lucky because of the size and shape of this building, which gives us the opportunity to do everything in a one way Covid-friendly system. Everything in this building, including toilets and staircases, has an entrance and an exit, which is very rare for a nightclub space.

“We’ve got a great footprint outside and our ventilation system works well. We have 17 sanitiser stations throughout the venues and marshals, security and first-aid to make it a safe and family friendly environment. Obviously, we are all living in difficult and precarious times and it’s really hard to be in a situation where you don’t know what is happening from one day to the next, whether it’s with regards to opening times, whether you can play music or not, or what you can and can’t do according to the latest government advice.

The venue, purpose-built in the 80s is part of Livingston’s infrastructure and DNA, says Mr Laurie.

“We’ve obviously got a responsibility towards ourselves, our staff and our patrons to do something special that make this time a little bit more bearable. Halloween is going to be difficult this year so it’s important to lay on something that people can enjoy. It’s a family time and we are lucky we have a children’s license to enable us to do this.“The interactive adventure will be open to all ages (with parental guidance) with a maximum of six people experiencing the Scare Maze at any one time.

"It makes it difficult when it comes to ensuring we break even, but we are invested in it,” adds Mr Laurie. “Over the 12 days, from 5pm -10pm, we hope to have around four thousand people visiting us.”
