The Society of High Constables of Edinburgh, which provides a ceremonial role for Edinburgh City Council, will also donate £2,500 to each of four food banks in the city.

The Society’s Moderator, Jacqueline Easson, said: “The letters of thanks that we receive from recipients each year tell us just how much the parcels mean to them.

“We are particularly indebted to Jill and David Miller who for many years have been doing the ‘shopping’ and then the not inconsiderable task of packaging the contents. It is truly a labour of love!”

Depute Lord Provost Joan Griffiths praised the Society for its good work. She said: “The High Constables are best known for escorting the Lord Provost and members of the Council on ceremonial occasions.

“However, this annual commitment with the parcels adds some cheer for those who may be on their own.”
