This is why you heard fireworks in Edinburgh last night
Today, February, 12, 2021 marks the Chinese New Year and while the exact source is yet to be found, people have speculated that this why fireworks were being set of in the city last night; to celebrate.
One Twitter user, Holly Ennis, posted: “Listening to fireworks over Edinburgh #ChineseNewYear - hello to the Year of the Ox.”

Hide AdOthers weren’t so sure of the reason behind the noise, with another user, Julie Drybrough, saying: “Are there fireworks going off in #Edinburgh tonight?
“Anyone know what’s going on?”
Ewan Jeffrey was another confused resident who took to the social media platform to try to find answers: “Been hearing what sounds like fireworks in Edinburgh tonight! Including
after midnight.
"Is there something going on?”
Today welcomes the start of the year of the Ox according to the Lunar calendar.
The Ox is known for its strength, reliability, fairness and conscientiousness, as well as inspiring confidence in others.

Hide AdAccording to the traditional Qin legend, this means those born in the year of the Ox, 2021 as well as 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009 also share these traits.
In 2021, the Chinese celebrations will begin today, Friday, and end on February 22.
In previous years, large celebrations would have taken place in the streets but this can’t be the case due to coronavirus restrictions.
On Friday evening, the iconic Edinburgh Castle will be lit up red to mark the start of the Chinese New Year.

Hide AdWhile the answer to what the mysterious late night fireworks were for appears to have been cleared up, some residents across Edinburgh were disappointed by the commotion.
Several concerned people tagged the police in their posts try to try figure out what was going on.
One user, said: “Fireworks past midnight in the Centre of Edinburgh. Feel sorry for the pet owners and people trying to sleep.
"Chinese New Year or not it’s still unacceptable at this time of night.”
Police Scotland have been contacted for a comment.
