Young figure skating hopeful Mia Drummond, 14, took to the ice on a frozen Inverleith Pond in Edinburgh to show off her skills.

Mia, who has not been able to train at her home rink of Murrayfield since it closed last March, was delighted to have the chance to practice in the open air on Saturday.

Her mother, Liz Drummond, said Mia had been skating since the age of six and, due to lockdown, had missed out on the chance to compete in qualifying rounds for the British Junior Figure Skating Championships.

Before the pandemic, she skated five times a week, starting most days at 6am, before school.

Ms Drummond said: “She was so happy to be on the ice again.”

Other figure skaters and ice hockey players also enjoyed the frozen pond, while even those without skates stepped onto the ice.

Yesterday may have been skaters’ last chance this winter to enjoy an outdoor rink, as temperatures are due to rise from today.
