In the video, the 58-year-old’s wife, Susan, can be seen anxiously waiting outside his ward while Neil’s discharge is finalised.

The sound of distant applause heralds Neil’s appearance, as NHS staff on the ward give him a guard of honour.

In a teary reunion, Susan can be seen running to hug her husband as he reaches the door, where staff help him into a wheelchair.

A second segment of the video shows dozens of NHS staff lining the corridor and clapping as Susan wheels Neil out of the hospital - for what both will hope is the very last time.

Describing the family’s joy at having him back, Mr Edward’s daughter-in-law, Victoria, said: “It is great having him home after five weeks in the hospital.”
