5. Gladhouse Reservoir
Gladhouse Reservoir is the largest area of freshwater in the Lothians. It can be found about five miles south of Penicuik, Midlothian, around a 45 minute drive from the city centre. It has two islands and is stocked with brown trout. Be aware there is no official car park here. Photo: Getty Images
For obvious reasons, South Queensferry gets busy on a sunny day. With those stunning views of the Forth Bridges, there's nothing like a dip in the Firth of Forth here. And on New Year's Day, the Loony Dook takes place, with hundreds of people in fancy dress taking a plunge into the freezing waters to celebrate the New Year. Photo: Getty Images
About 50 minutes' drive from Edinburgh, Aberdour's Silver Sands beach is located near Burntisland in Fife. This small sandy beach has blue flag status so there are lifeguards, toilets, a beachfront cafe, and access to first aid. Photo: Ian Rutherford
The lovely Gullane Beach in East Lothian is just a 40 minute drive from the Capital. This sandy beach has views of the Firth of Forth, but watch out for windsurfers as it's popular with watersports enthusiasts on a breezy day. Photo: Getty Images
