Work is to begin on fixing Dean Path on the Water of Leith after it closed over four years ago.

The land on the side of the path has been shifting slowly, blocking the path for years leading it to be closed and reopened several times prior to 2016.

It has remained closed since early that year.

Diversions are in place to take people walking the route around the damaged and blocked path.

The pathway is currently closed between Belford Bridge and Hawthornebank.

As well as soil and vegetation, the trees that grow on the side of the path have also slipped down to rest across the pathway.

In January 2019, the council announced that they were undergoing legal issues with other parties involved with the land, and that full investigations had to be done before proceedings could continue.

They stated that the safety of the public when using the path was paramount.

Now, a solution has been reached and the City of Edinburgh Council will soon begin the restoration work needed to reopen the path.

Culture and Communities Convener Councillor Donald Wilson said: “We are delighted to have been able to reach a solution for the reinstatement of this part of the Dean Path along the Water of Leith.

“Its restoration will return a key section of our off-road paths network which I know will be welcomed by the many people who enjoy using it – including myself for running - particularly during this difficult time.
