Pervert jailed for abusing young girls

A PERVERT from Liberton who indecently assaulted two young girls over a six year period in the 1990s has been jailed for 24 months.

Robert Tait, 63, preyed on the two children - who cannot be named for legal reasons - between October 1990 and March 1996.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard how Tait touched the girls - who were aged 12 and 13 when the abuse began - and exposed himself to them, and also performed sex acts on himself.

Tait pleaded guilty to two charges of lewd, indecent and libidinous practices and behaviour at an earlier appearance.

The court heard how the 12-year-old was abused on three occasions between October 3 1990 and October 2 1991.

He preyed on the second girl between August 24 1995 and March 31 1996.

The court also heard how the women contacted the police about Tait’s antics many years after he subjected them to their horrifying ordeals.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Derrick McIntyre said Tait would be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.

He added: “You were in your 40s when these incidents took place. It is appalling. I have no other option but to impose a custodial disposal.”
