Police investigating Edinburgh tram '˜corrupt payments'

Police Scotland confirmed they are probing comments made at Thursday’s Edinburgh Tram Inquiry where it was alleged a witness had knowledge of ‘corrupt payments’ being made or solicited.

Former Lothian Buses boss Neil Renilson claimed in evidence to have information about the allegations and agreed to share that with the inquiry.

It came after Inquiry counsel Jonathan Lake QC asked: “Do you have information to the effect that there were employees or agents of tie soliciting or receiving corrupt payments.”

Mr Renilson replied: “Yes.”

Lord Hardie immediately told those assembled he wanted to learn more about the matter before allowing it to be shared in public. The inquiry has now ended for the festive break.

However, speaking to the Evening News, Police Scotland confirmed they have now launched an investigation of their own.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police in Edinburgh are aware of recent comments made during evidence at the Edinburgh Tram Inquiry.

“The matter was highlighted to police on Thursday, December 14.

“Inquiries are ongoing and as such it would not be appropriate to say anything further at this time.”
