£5m upgrades for roads and schools pledged as West Craigs homes plans tabled

House-builder Taylor Wimpey has drawn up detailed proposals for its West Craigs site, to the west of Maybury Road, after securing planning permission in principle for the development in July 2018. The detailed scheme has already received 43 objection and not a single letter of support.

When outline planning permission was approved last year, Edinburgh City Council’s development management sub-committee raised concerns over transport infrastructure along Edinburgh’s western corridor being able to cope with the additional pressure of new residents. But terms for a legal agreement have been given the thumbs up, subject to planning permission, meaning the developer will hand over funding for improvements.

Pauline Mills, land and planning director for Taylor Wimpey East Scotland, said: “We are delighted to confirm that we have made our AMC application for the development of land at West Craigs in Edinburgh, following close consultation with city planners and adjacent landowners over the last few years.

“Our proposal includes a provision of 25 per cent affordable homes within the development, and through sums already settled in the section 75 agreement, a significant contribution of almost £5million will be made towards local

education and transport, which will include improvements to the Maybury and Barnton junctions, and the installation of a crossing on Maybury Road.”

She added: “As well as delivering much needed new homes in west Edinburgh, our development will provide a range of economic benefits for the local area which includes supporting over 160 jobs per year of construction, as well as

the attraction of new customers to local businesses.

“We believe this development would be a great addition to the local area. It also complements our other developments across the region.”
