The Scottish Labour leader – who is attending this week’s Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia where Hillary Clinton will officially launch her run for the White House – said many of the same circumstances that delivered a leave vote in the UK exist in the US. She said: “Too many people, in the UK, the US and right across the world, feel they have no hope and nothing to lose.

“Those of us who rejected the division created by Brexit leaders and who are appalled by the racist campaigning of Donald Trump must never dismiss the views of people who vote for them. We need to address their concerns and invest in their future, not write them all off.
