David Marshall’s penalty save sent the nation into euphoria last night as fans, politicians and celebrities alike celebrated Scotland’s first trip to a major tournament in a generation.

As soon as the final whistle blew in Serbia, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted – tongue firmly in cheek - a much-maligned video of her celebrating after the defeat of rival politician Jo Swinson at last year’s General Election.

She added: “Massive congratulations to Steve Clarke and the team. After 22 years, @ScotlandNT men are off to a major tournament. What a lift for the country. Well done!”

Scottish Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf took the chance to tweet ‘STOP THE COUNT’, the bizarre declaration of Donald Trump’s which quickly became an internet meme.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson was more subdued in his tribute to Steve Clarke and the Scottish men’s team. He said: “So great to see Scotland going forward to the Euros. Massive well done to the whole team #SERSCO #Euro2020”

The Scotland team themselves were not to be outdone, and shared an image from Trainspotting to mark the occasion: “It’s actually pretty good being Scottish.”

In the film, Ewan McGregor’s Renton famously quipped about when ‘Archie Gemmill scored against Holland in 1978!’ Judging by the reactions of Scots online, David Marshall’s penalty save of 2020 could soon topple the moment as every fan’s cherished memory.

And Line of Duty actor and die-hard Scotland fan Martin Compston shared a passionate video of him celebrating and singing Flower of Scotland, seemingly on set, with a bottle of champagne.

Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges chipped in to show his excitement at the news. He said: “Mad Scotland! Said it years ago that we’d quality for Euro 2021. Brilliant.”

Outlander’s Sam Heughan also shared his joy, tweeting: “Oh my god!!! YESSSSSS @ScotlandNT yes Marshall!!!!”

Sports commentator Chris Sutton professed his love for a particular player last night, tweeting: “I love David Marshall...”

Copying Nicola Sturgeon’s excitement for the game, Janey Godley posted a series of tweets such as “Yas!” and “Hurrah!” and included her own referee commentary in her trademark First Minister impersonation to show her enthusiasm for Scotland’s win.

Famous illusionist Uri Geller, known for his spoon bending, claimed in a video he posted on Twitter that he made sure Scotland went through by preventing Serbia from scoring.

Alongside his video, he tweeted: “I believe in in my powers. Well done Scotland I’m inviting you all to my private Scottish Island for more inspiration Lamb Island.”

Greg Mchugh, aka Gary Tank Commander, posted a video of himself shouting “Yas” with football commentary announcing Scotland’s victory in the background.

Channel 4 news broacaster, Jon Snow retweeted Scotland’s First Minister’s celebration post, saying: “Such passion! One wishes one was Scottish!”

Trainspotting’s author, Irvine Welsh showed his disbelief at the news, tweeting that: ‘someone has spiked my drink with acid. I imagined Scotland qualified there.”

Frankie Boyle also claimed that he was ‘never in doubt’ just after penalty shoot outs finished.
