EDINBURGH South MP Ian Murray has won the nomination of the Jewish Labour Movement for Labour’s deputy leadership.

The JLM also nominated Wigan MP Lisa Nandy for leader.

Mr Murray said he was honoured to have their support. “JLM has a proud and important place in our party for 100 years, and I want to thank its members for sticking with the Labour Party through the most difficult of circumstances for the Jewish community.”

Mr Murray issued a “heartfelt apology” earlier this week, saying Labour had treated the Jewish community “appallingly”.

All the leader and deputy leader candidates are due to answer questions today at the Scottish hustings for the contest being held in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, another candidate for the deputy leadership, Dawn Butler, held a meeting for Labour members in Edinburgh.

She told them: “As a party, we will only win if we support Scottish Labour Party members, councillors, and MSP to rebuild Labour’s presence in Scotland.

“I intend to ensure that Labour Shadow Cabinet meetings are held all over the UK, including in cities like Edinburgh.”

On independence she said: “I support the democratic right of Scotland to self-determination. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that Labour needs to focus on listening to and supporting the Scottish people, so we can win back their trust. We need to nurture a stronger and deeper relationship with all our nations, rather than building more walls and barriers.”
