The 150-foot high Melville Monument was erected in 1821 in memory of the First Viscount Melville, Henry Dundas, and campaigners have called for the statue to be removed as it ‘glorifies’ Scotland’s role in slavery.

Edinburgh City Council leader Adam McVey confirmed yesterday that a plaque will be added to the Melville Monument which will detail Henry Dundas’ ties to the slave trade.
